Wroclaw International School

School Introduction

Wroclaw International School (WIS) is a not-for-profit educational institution established in 2002 as the first international school in South – Western Poland. It has grown into an exciting learning community which serves the needs of expatriates in Lower Silesia. WIS’s program of studies is based on the New Zealand curriculum. Since September 2007 WIS introduces PYP and MYP of the International Baccalaureate. The language of instruction is English. French and Polish are the foreign languages taught. WIS programme extends from Pre-Kindergarten (age 3) to grade 10 (age 15). With an enrollment of over 100 students, we greatly value and strive to maintain the caring ethos of WIS, and small class sizes ensure that students' individual learning needs are met. WIS provides a wide range of extracurricular activities and students services such as: ESL, Counselling Programme and Mother Tongue Support. Our modern (opened in February 2004) purpose-built facility is located in the centre of Wroclaw. Second campus is located in a newly renovated building in the southern part of the city.

The teaching faculty at WIS is experienced, certified and qualified; most are native speakers of English, coming from Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United States. Additionally there are teachers from Poland, the Czech Republic and France, as well as Korean and Japanese liaisons who support the two biggest communities at the school. Small classes with the capacity of maximum 18 students enable the teachers to focus on their student’s individual needs. Each year the faculty members take part in professional workshops organized by ECIS and IBO.

Since the year 2002 WIS has been a member of European Council of International Schools (ECIS). WIS is a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). WIS is pursuing authorization as an IB World School.

The governing body of the school is Foundation of International Education, a public charity formed in Autumn 1998 in order to enrich the education of society.

ESL Program Introduction

As in most international schools, many students at WIS do not speak English as their first language and require support to foster their acquisition of English. To meet this need, we provide a comprehensive and dynamic ESL program, allowing children to succeed in English-based classroom. This program is provided and supported by all teachers.

We support the non-native speakers of English in the mainstream classroom or pull these students out of some of their regular classes and give basic English instruction until we feel they are ready to be mainstreamed.
