School Introduction

Canada Language Study is a homestay school located in a rural area in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is near the town of Salmon Arm and between the larger towns of Kamloops and Kelowna that have Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers Univerity. It is about a 7 hour bus ride from Vancouver. This is a river valley with nature all around and forested hillsides. The home is on 20 hectares of nature with trees, wildflowers, a creek and nature trails. You can cycle the country roads to the Shuswap River which is close by. This is an almost 100 percent English speaking area. People are friendly and you will have lots of opportunities to use English and experience Canadian culture. The Greyhound bus stops at Salmon Arm where I will meet you. There is also an airport at Kelowna which is a two hour drive from here.

The teacher qualifications (BA English, CERTESL Certificate) are certified by TESL Canada. TESL Canada sets standards for teachers of English as a Second Language.

ESL Program Introduction

This is a total immersion English language program. English is fully integrated into daily life. This should provide you with fast progress. You will use English and only English all day, every day for everything. There are 5 hour classes every day, Monday to Friday, plus homework and opportunities for individualized learning. The program will be customized and individualized to meet your needs. There are only 2 or 3 other students. Activities in the communilty such as pot luck dinners, musical events, visiting farmer's markets and watching live theatre are also part of the curriculum. You will use English, not just study it. There is a good variety of text books and listening material. The main focus is on conversation - speaking and listening and pronunciation - but reading and writing is also included for an integrated program. This program is available for all levels of students - beginner, intermediate and advanced. The teacher will always be available for you. You and the other students and the teacher are the household for the time you are here. You will participate in normal daily life such as helping, based on your ability and interest, in cooking, eating and clearing up after. This is an experience in international living.
